The Venue
BMW Welt
The BMW Welt is a multi-functional customer experience and exhibition facility of the BMW AG, in direct proximity to the BMW Headquarters and the Olympiapark.
It displays a fascinating architecture with its distinctive Double Cone and the floating cloud roof, for example.
The BMW Welt is one of the first buildings representing a new generation of communication buildings for the 21st century. This is where the corporation goes into dialogue with its customers, friends and visitors from all over the world – a place of meeting and of change.
The open style of architecture and the glass facade allow a lot of light into the rooms and open up the building towards its surroundings. Simultaneously, the BMW Welt harmonically blends into the context of the architecture of the Olympiapark and the existing BMW buildings.
The interior of the BMW Welt proves just as remarkable as its architecture. Even the smallest detail conveys to the visitors the notion of uniqueness: Different room perspectives, an easy orientation and a maximum of comfort create the right atmosphere in which to present the BMW brand as an impressive experience. This means: To see, feel, hear, smell, taste BMW – in brief: To experience the world of BMW with all senses.
The BMW Welt was designed by the architects Coop Himmelb(l)au for BMW Group, and the facility was built from August 2003 through summer 2007.

Sustainability at the BMW Welt
Ecological Sustainability of the BMW Welt
Climate control
It is the architecture of the building which forms the base of the all-round-experience BMW Welt. The appearance of the BMW Welt is dominated by extensive glass façades on the side walls as well as the roof.
In order to avoid the building to heat up too fast, the architects already intensively considered and evaluated the solar altitude during the planning, and reacted by creating artificial shadow at the necessary places.
Therefore the building is - despite its high percentage of glass façades - very well insulated.
To ensure the remaining need of climatisation, a cooling cover is being used. The cooling energy for the ventilating system is gained mainly from the outgoing air.
Depending on the external air conditions, a cooling between 640 kW and 1080 kW is being saved.
Furthermore, the hall can - thanks to large glass façades and a intelligently operated shutters [?] system at the roof apertures - be ventilated naturally most of the year.
This way, in summer the air transportation costs and the related cooling energy are reduced, while in winter the solar heat introduction through the extensive glass façades are used to heat the hall.
The building all-over meets the energy-saving regulations (in German: EnEV)
Photovoltaic complex
A further contribution to energy saving is provided by the photovoltaic complex, which is, with a total surface of 6.300 m2 installed on the roof of the building.
Illumination
Because of the lucency of the building - thanks to the extensive glass façades - many of the rooms do not require any artificial light. In the course of the solar altitude analyses, all permanent work stations were actively oriented in a way so that there was enough natural light and no need of any artificial light.
Fire Prevention
The BMW Welt serves as gateway for the brand BMW, as delivery center for the BMW vehicles and also as event venue. It is the place of personal encounters of clients and interested persons with people as embassadors of the brand BMW. In order to ensure a highest possible security for visitors as well as employees the BMW WElt fulfils highest standards of fire, property and personal safety. Next to steel and glass, the dominating materials, the BMW Welt used most modern, not inflamable materials.
The BMW WElt did not use any plastic material which often would exhale environmental-damaging susbstances.
Rain Water
The BMW Welt for one fascinates by its unique architecture, but also by its generous space concept. Due to the immense size a sealed surface of approximately 20.000 m2 is born. If the here collected rain water was directed to the canalisation, it would present a big burden for the latter. In order to disburden the canalisation, and to guide the collected rain water to the ground water in a natural way, the BMW Welt is using trenchings. It is in these with gravel filled ditches with a volume of 850 m3 that the rain water is led, and is so - thanks to the delay - naturally filtered and returned to the ground water.
